Norway Rats, also called Brown Rats, live outdoors an in buildings. Also Norway Rats burrow in soil, in garbage and woodpiles, and around and under concrete slabs. In addition, Norway rats nest in basements around piles of debris or undisturbed materials. Also, the Norway Rat can enter home through a hole as small as the size of a quarter.

Controlling a rat problem demands prevention as well. Animal Removal Services Of Virginia Rat Trapping Removal Experts will eal holes in interior and exterior walls, foundations, around windows and flooring which will limit rat access to your home. A rat can squeeze its body through any space it can get its head through. And by using their powerful teeth, they can make an entry point into wood and plastic pipes. Keeping lids on trash cans and eliminating outdoor sources of water make your property less attractive to Roof and Norway rats.

Rat droppings, fresh gnawing and rat tracks reveal areas where house rats are moving around. Also, you may find rats nests in your home, either your basement or attic. Norway Rats like basements while Roof Rats like attics. Also Norway Rats will burrow and build nests along the foundation of your homes and buildings.

Finally, it’s worth repeating, effective rat control involves sanitation, building out(rat proof construction) and population reduction. The first two are useful as preventive measures. Covering up any rat entrances into your home will be our first step. But, when a Virginia home rat infestation already exists our Rat Trapping Removal Experts must use some form of population control right off. Animal Removal Services Of Virginia rat reduction techniques ALWAYS starts with “building out” while trapping. Finally, it bears repeating, we believe “building out” and trapping are THE most effective rat control removal methods. We prefer not using Rodent baits, unless proven to be ecologically safe.

PLEASE DON’T USE ANY BAIT THAT MAY KILL YOUR PETS OR MAKE THEM VERY SICK OR ANY WILDLIFE THAT MAY EAT A RAT THAT HAS RUN OUT OF YOUR HOME TO DIE – THAT IS UNETHICAL AND DANGEROUS!

The Two Rats Of Virginia: Norway Rat and Roof Rat

Roof Rats vs. Norway Rats

Size
There are difference in size between the two Virginia rats.  Roof Rats are a bit smaller than Norway Rats. As a matter of fact, the average Norway Rat  measures between eight and and ten inches in length, while the Roof Rat measures  about seven to eight inches to ten. Norway Rats tend to be stronger and healthier than Roof Rats. Also, they have smaller ears and eyes than the Roof Rat.

Appearance
Roof rats are also called Black Rats.  Generally, though not always, they are black in color with a lighter stomach. Additionally, these critters have long, scaly tails that are as long as ten inches. On the other hand, a Norway Rat, also called the Brown Rat, has brownish-gray fur and their tail measures four to eight inches.

Norway Rat and Roof Rat Damage

Behavior
Not only do these two rats look different, they also behave differently. These difference determine different kinds of destruction in Virginia homes and buildings.

Destruction
For example, Norway Rats live at ground level and enter homes, buildings and yards through burrowing. Their burrowing can lead to the destruction of  foundation, sidewalks, structures and patios. Roof Rats will look for shelter on tops of roofs in attics, where they may chew through roofs, walls, insulation, pipes and wires.
